For our next project, we will be constructing a statue that explores gender roles in today's society — specifically, those forced upon children.
We believe that toy soldiers embody the unspoken expectation for young boys to "man up" and that barbie dolls, as many know, can lead to an unrealistic body image and the belief that young girls' self-worth are inversely proportional to their body weight.
In response, we will be building a statue in the shape of gender signs out of these toys — but with the roles reverse. The male gender sign of a circle and an arrow will be comprised of barbie dolls, and the female gender sign of a stationary person will be made out of toy soldiers.
We hope that this project will allow people to reconsider gender roles, and the negative physical and mental effects that these traditional gender roles have on children and their individual identity.
